SME’s bemoan SA lockdown

Economic analyst and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) say the lockdown which is in force in South Africa SA has serious economic repercussions on Malawi.

South Africa has implemented a 21 day lockdown with an aim of curbing Corona virus pandemic which has affected many people in the country.

Speaking to radio Islam, Dr Betchani Tchereni said the lockdown might affect companies hence resulting in redundancy and shortage of other supplies.

“Government should act swiftly to protect jobs and livelihoods of Malawian people in light of the South African economic lockdown and cushioning the after effects of the lockdown,” adds Tchereni

Speaking in a separate interview SMEs chairperson William Peter Mwale, defined the lockdown as a major blow to Malawian business operators.

“Most business operators depend on South Africa therefore it will be hard for their businesses to survive,” says Mwale

He advised them not to take advantage of the lockdown to raise the prices and manage their capital.
