Road Authority to reconstruct Nsipe-Liwonde Road in November

Road Authority RA has announced that it will begin the reconstruction of the 55 kilometer Nsipe-Liwonde road in November this year

Speaking during an awareness campaign in Balaka public relations officer for RA Portia Kajanga stated that the road will be constructed by a Chinese company funded by African development fund, European Union and government of Malawi with a total cost of 74 billion kwacha

Kajanga noted that road construction will take 18 months to complete and feature key developments such as a roundabout at chingeni, a railway overpass in Balaka town, a market at Chiyendausiku and three bridges

“The project is crucial for transport sector as it will reduce distances involved in transporting goods from Nacala through Chiponde border post,” Kajanga

Welcoming the development group village head Mpilisi expressed his support and enthusiasm for the construction of the major road stating that it will boost economic activities, improve transportation and reduce unemployment

Taxi operator Samuel Sasamala from Liwonde described the project as a relief to them but urged authorities to ensure the project continues without interruption

Meanwhile, Balaka district principal human resources Officer Kassam Kasanjala called on authorities to intervene in the completion of the 766.5 million kwacha Balaka loop road which spans less than two kilometres and remains unfinished two years after construction began

He said for people in the district to have confidence in the project there is need to first complete the small stretch which connects ESCOM offices and Ngwangwa filling station
