President Professor Peter Mutharika has told International Monetary Fund IMF delegation that his government will tackle pressing national challenges, including fuel scarcity, farm input shortages and food insecurity.
Speaking Sunday evening during a meeting at Mtunthama State Lodge in Lilongwe, Mutharika said it is crucial to begin by resolving short-term challenges such as debt restructuring and limited foreign exchange availability.
Mutharika said at the moment, all revenue government collects is being used to service debts, but is working on this and hopeful that IMF will intervene with necessary solutions
“Mutharika said “Malawi will get support from IMF, private sector and government institutions to address forex challenges so that the country can stabilise the economy as soon as possible,” Mutharika
Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralization, Joseph Mwanamveka said the meeting was fruitful as it allowed IMF to better understand the President’s vision for addressing the country’s challenges.
IMF Director for Africa, Abebe Selassie said IMF is ready to support Malawi in addressing macroeconomic crisis through policy advice, capacity development and financing.
He said the Fund is in the process of supporting government reforms and will make recommendations wherever necessary
