President Chakwera fires Director of Public Prosecutions
President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has fired Director of Public Prosecutions DPP Dr Steven Kayuni over the arrest of director of Anti-Corruption Bureau ACB Martha Chizuma
Chakwera fired Kayuni when he addressed the nation on matters relating to the report on the commission of Inquiry on the arrest of Chizuma.
He said Dr Kayuni has been fired over his decision to pursue a personal grudge using a public office.
Chakwera has since appointed Masauko Chamkakala as Director of Public Prosecution DPP.
In the address, the president says is maintaining last year’s stand of supporting Chizuma though the inquiry report recommended her prosecution
Chakwera however said as leader of Malawi he would not obstruct anyone from seeking justice on the matter since the court earlier on ruled that anyone hurt by the leaked audio is free to seek legal redress.
The president has meanwhile asked inspector general of police to act on senior police officers for disregarding his directive to release Chizuma unconditionally.
On interagency cooperation, one of the recommendations from the inquiry report, Chakwera has asked secretary to cabinet to hold a meeting with heads of departments that are championing the fight against corruption.
Meanwhile, legal expert and political analyst have welcomed president Chakwera decision for firing Dr Steven Kayuni.
In an interview lawyer Osman Kennedy and political analyst Victor Chipofya have however faulted President Dr Lazarus Chakwera for openly advising those who were injured with the leaked audio to seek court redress.
Osman Kennedy, legal expert.\in his remarks, Chipofya feared Chakwera’s remarks will have a negative impact on the war against corruption, which ACB is championing.
