
Parliament condemns Violence on Civil Servants, MPs
Parliament has condemned violence that happened on Wednesday in Lilongwe where civil servants and members of parliament were attacked by armed men
Member of Parliament for Mulanje Bale Victor Musowa complained that some legislators were attacked while driving in the capital city
Musowa asked parliament to consider deployment of military officers to protect the parliamentarians
He said the thugs are boys of some members of parliament in government side hence asking the speaker to curb the violence which is putting their lives at jeopardy
Leader of the house Richard Chimwendo Banda said it is Malawi Congress Party and Democratic Progressive Party that are propagating violence in the country
He said all members must stop violence together adding nobody should look innocent in the national assembly
On her part UDF leader in parliament Lilian Patel said she has never witnessed such violence in Malawi and bemoaned targeting especially targeting female parliamentarians
Speaker of parliament Catherine Gotani Hara requested leader of the house as minister of unity to take the matter seriously because is an issue of national interest
In a related story, Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has asked Inspector General of Police to swiftly act on hooliganism which are slowly settling in Lilongwe.
CDEDI Executive Director, Sylvester Namiwa says it is very unfortunate to see that people who are perpetrating violence are going scot-free in front of police officers.
Namiwa has warned perpetrators that one day they will be brought to book to answer crimes they are committing.
