Over 60 illegal immigrants arrested in Malawi

Department of immigration and citizenship services in the northern region apprehended 66 male Ethiopian nationals for illegal entry.

Deputy public relations officer of regional immigration office Francis Chitambuli said the immigrants were arrested around Phwexi area in Rumphi district.

Chitambuli said officers who were patrolling the area had received a tip from well wishers that there were suspicious people hiding in the mountains.

“The 66 were detained at Mxuxu prison waiting legal proceeding,” he said

The arrest comes barely 6 days after the regional immigration office started road block operation as one way of curbing illegal migration.
