Over 3.3 million Malawians face hunger
The 2018 Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee MVAC report says over 3.3 million people in will be food insecure this year.
The report says this follows a 28.4 percent decrease in maize production
Meanwhile, agricultural experts have expressed differing views on MVAC report.
Speaking in an interview with radio Islam, chairperson of Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture Dr Chidanti Malunga says the report does not reflect what is happening on the ground.
Dr Malunga says “the country experienced dry spells, fall army worms and drought hence the figures might not be true.”
However, National Coordinator for Civil Society Agriculture Network CISANET, Pamela Kuwali says the figures are expected to rise once the final assessment is done.
Kuwali said “the figures should not be a cause for concern as they represent 20 percent of the population.”
She has meanwhile urged authorities to act and ensure that food insecurity is dealt with once and for all.
