Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development has announced that out of 110,000 metric tons of fertilizer required for Farm Input Subsidy Program, only 37, 818 metric tons are currently available in warehouses.
Addressing a news conference Mbilizi said 10,149 metric tons are in transit from manufacturer and private sector is supplying an additional 62,000 metric tons
She adds that the redemption has commenced in most districts except Likoma where special arrangements are being made to deliver the inputs.
The Minister said government has engaged 44 local transporters to ensure timely delivery to retail points and every truck is escorted by Malawi Police Service to safeguard integrity of consignments.
She said 348,771 bags of fertilizer have reached retail centres and are being accessed by farmers but warned that anyone found engaging in misconduct will face full force of the law
In his remarks Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Ben Phiri has assured Malawians that local councils are ready to implement guidelines set by ministry of agriculture
