One party regime victims seek compensation
One party regime victims have expressed concern over governments’ delay to compensate them for suffering atrocities
Speaking during a press briefing in Lilongwe one of the victims Sangwani Mkandawire said many Malawians were detained without trial, faced inhumane treatment in prisons, unfair termination of employment and lost properties as well as lives between 1964 to 1994
Mkandawire said they have been engaging different government officials on the matter since 1994 when national compensation tribunal was created but many of them have not received compensation
He added that 23000 people are the victims who are expected to be compensated 20 million kwacha per file
Mkandawire disclosed that Minister of foreign affairs Eisenhower Mkaka uttered bad words to the victims when they demanded the compensation
“A lot of people died waiting for their compensation and many will die without getting the money if the delay continues.” Mkandawire
In his remarks Unandi Banda who is also one of the victims said they are giving government an ultimatum of 1 month to address their grievances failure which they will camp at the office of president and cabinet
