MRA Louds Liwonde Customs and Excise Office

Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) says Liwonde Customs and Excise Office has seen its revenue surge to 2 billion kwacha, from the previous 100 million kwacha, due to the rehabilitation of the Nacara railway line.

According to MRA Marketing Manager, Wilma Chalulu, the office handles around 300 containers of various commodities each month, including flour, fuel and coal.

Chalulu however, expressed concerns about hostile behavior from some communities engaged in smuggling operations and threatening officers.

In Mangochi, for instance, Chalulu admitted notable increase in the smuggling of vehicles from South Africa.

To combat smuggling, she mentioned erection of a new station  at Idrus, implementing Flexible Ant-smuggling Team FAST and impounding the smuggle vehicles with support from the public.

MRA has therefore called on communities to cooperate with tax payments and the media to help raise awareness about the importance of tax compliance.
