MRA donates auctioned cartons of Qurans to MAM
Malawi Revenue Authority MRA has donated ten cartons of Qurans that were listed on auction to Muslim Association of Malawi MAM.
This follows outrage from the Muslim Community after the news of the listed items went viral on social media yesterday.
In an interview with Radio Islam however MRA head of corporate affairs Steve Kapoloma said the holy books which were imported into Malawi through Kamuzu International airport 3 months ago were listed as per procedure but could not have been sold.
He said according to laws, all the items that have overstayed in MRA’s warehouses must be gazette and published in the papers before being disposed off although are duty free.
Kapoloma said MAM reached out to MRA following the news hence the donation.
However, in a separate interview MAM spokesperson Sheikh Dinala Chabulika said the authority confirmed to the association the intention of auctioning the Holy Books which he said is very surprising.
Sheikh Chabulika said this is the first time such incident is being reported as the association has engaged MRA several times whenever a consignment of Quran arrives in the country.
