Malawi Human Rights Commission MHRC has called for renewed efforts to combat the growing threat of digital violence against women and girls.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Islam, as Malawi Joins the rest of the world in commemorating 16 days of Activism against Gender Based Violence MHRC executive director Habiba Osman, says many women in the country are facing gender –based violence on line despite their low participation in digital technology.
Osman says MACRA, government and stakeholders should promote women’s participation in digital spaces as 10 percent of Malawian women use internet against an overall 12.8%.
The executive director says despite Malawi’s obligations under Electronic Transaction on cyber Security act section 85 and 88 cases of digital abuse continue to rise.
Meanwhile, Association of Women in Media chairperson, Dorothy Kachitsa says, female journalists continue to face harassment, stalking, cyber bullying and coordinated attacks on social media which need urgent action.
