Mangochi town council has burnt sub standard shops last night.
The shops which were built of glass had been used for selling liquor.
The council demolished the shops after it gave them a notice to vacate the places because the shops were illegal.
The demolishon angered the owners who burnt tires and attempted to steal in the shops of Burundi nationals.
The police chased them and other vendors who gathered to demonstrate.
According to chairperson of the council Edna Yusuf in March this year they gave the vendors a notice to demolish the shops and they promised to do so hence asking for more time.
Yusuf said when they met again recently on the matter the council granted them 7 days ultimatum.
Vice chairperson of Mangochi central market John Kasimu has confirmed receiving the notice letter but the vendors did not demolish the substandard shops.
Kassim said most of the shops have been claused because owners are afraid that that their property can be destroyed.
