MCP MPs cancel briefing on Convention, Mumba demands reversal of omission
Members of parliament for Malawi Congress (MCP) have cancelled their press briefing this afternoon because their concerns have been addressed by authorities
A representative of the MPs Ulemu Chilapondwa said the security concerns they raised have been resolved
Chilapondwa said the 76 legislators they said wanted to talk about their candidate whose name he did not disclose
Some of the MPs who were at Golde Peacock in Lilongwe for the presser are Lobin Lowe, Alfred Jiya, Mike Bango, Ulemu Msungama and Francis Belekanyama.
Soko and Company lawyers have demanded Malawi Congress Party MCP to immediately reverse its decision of omitting their client Vitumbiko Mumba from the list of approved and vetted candidates eligible to contest for the position of first deputy president
The demand has been made through a letter addressed to secretary general of MCP and the party’s national convention of organizing committee
Lawyer Khumbo Soko says should the party elect to stand by its unlawful decision to exclude their client from participating at the elective convention the reasons in writing justifying that decision be made available to them
Soko says if the grievances of their client remain unresolved by 12:30 today 7th August they will have no option but to seek court redress
He says Mumba submitted his nomination form on 10th July but on 6th June the party did not include his name in the list of approved candidates and no reasons were given to him for that omission.
Mumba reiterates his commitment to MCP’s values and hopes that this issue can be resolved expeditiously, soberly and constructively guided by constitution of the party.
