MAM hands over to government administration, classroom blocks for School
Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) has handed over to government administration and classroom blocks meant to establish Community Day Secondary School in Dedza.
The structure has been constructed at Kalambo in the area of Traditional Authority Kasumbu in the district.
Apart from the blocks, MAM has also constructed a masjid and drilled a borehole at the school.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the National Chairman for MAM, Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad, said MAM as a religious organization understands that education is a pillar to the country’s development.
Sheikh Muhammad said issues of early marriages and school dropouts cannot be addressed if the youth especially the girls are not provided with necessary resources to pursue their education.
He revealed that MAM is planning to establish more schools throughout the country to compliment government efforts of reducing distances students walk to attend classes.
“Very soon my organization is going to construct teachers’ houses in order to motivate teachers mostly working in the rural areas,” Sheikh Muhammad
Commenting on the matter, MAM Education Committee Chairperson, Dr John Kazembe, said they decided to construct the school after realizing that students from the area are walking long distances to access their education.
Dr Kazembe however appealed to government to send teachers and other supporting staff as soon as possible so that students should start using the facility in the forth coming school session.
Speaking after receiving the structure, Ward Councilor for the area, David Benson, commended MAM for the facility saying will help to reduce the school dropout rate as now students will no longer walk long distances to access education.
He also asked government to send teachers to the school as soon as possible so that school should start benefiting the community.
The school has been constructed with financial support from the Dubai Charity Organization of the United Arab Emirates.
