Board of Trustees of the Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) assured Muslims in the country that they will abide by the court ruling that cancelled the elections held under the 2018 constitution.
Briefing the media in Blantyre on Wednesday, chairperson for the board of trustees Sheikh Ali Kennedy said the 1994 constitution which the court said should be used in running the fresh elections, provides under section 10 (5) that the central body of the Association is eligible and has the mandate to organise the elections.
Sheikh Kennedy emphasized that the board welcomed the court ruling and would make sure that they organise the election in accordance with the constitution.
“I am not speaking in my capacity a Sheikh Kennedy but I am speaking as chairperson for the board, so as a board of trustees we would make sure that we follow all the necessary steps to run the election according to the law, don’t want to have an election and the someone goes to the court again, as Muslims, we don’t have to be spending our time in courts”, he explained.
Sheikh Kennedy urged the Muslim community to exercise patience as necessary steps are being taken to hold a free and credible election.He said when the processes are due, the board will duly announce the dates for the elections.
“Running an election is not an issue that can be done in hurry, it is a process you cannot hold an election in a month or two, so people should patient just like they remained patient waiting for the court judgment. But I am not saying we will not hold the elections no, we will hold it and the dates will be announced”, he added.
He also said the committee will provide opportunity to all eligible aspirants to register and contest when the time is due.
In his remarks, vice chairperson for the board senior chief Chowe urged the Muslims to refrain from believing hearsays and misinformation from other people as the board is following all the procedures without deviating from the court ruling and the constitution.
On his part, member of the board paramount chief Kawinga encouraged Muslims to remain united and make sure that the forth coming election is free and in accordance with the constitution.
A group of Muslims called Muslim Concerns sought court intervention, following the 2018 election which saw Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad being re-elected the national Chairman for the Muslim Association of Malawi.
On 20th February 2026, the High court ruled that the 2018 elections did not follow the right procedure by using the 2018 constitution, therefore commanded that fresh election should be conducted using the 1994 constitution.
