MALGA requests government to re-instate councils’ controlling officers cleared of covid-19 funds abuse

Malawi Local Government Association MALGA has requested government to re-instate all controlling officers whose councils have been cleared off the covid-19 funds misappropriation scandal.

MALGA acting executive director Harold Mkandawira has made the demand in a press statement when he was reacting to the covid-19 funds abuse audit report.

Mkandawire said the central government acted in hast as the report indicate that it was not necessarily to interdict the officials as some councils had nothing to do with the scandal.

“The report has proved our earlier claims that the plunder of covid-funds extensively happened in local councils was a mere misconception and misrepresentation of  facts by some actors of at the centre calculated at misleading the state president and the public,” Mkandawire

He said of the 1.3 billion kwacha 95 percent was utilised properly

Mkandawire has askedMalawi police service to uphold rights and freedoms of those accused when making the arrest and interrogations

In February this year, President Lazarus chakwera interdicted all council controlling officers following queries of the misappropriation of the 6.2 billion kwacha covid-19 funds.
