3,400 metric tonnes of maize purchased by the Malawi Government from Zambia has arrived in the country as part of the first phase of a 200,000-metric-tonne procurement programme.
Speaking at the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) warehouse in Kanengo, Lilongwe, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Roza Fatch Mbilizi said arrival of the maize marks an important milestone in stabilizing food availability and providing relief to households affected by the current shortage.
Mbilizi, said government is expecting 103,000 metric tonnes to be delivered in this phase, while the remaining 97,000 metric tonnes are scheduled to arrive by the end of March.
In his remarks, NFRA Chief Executive Officer George Macheka attributed the progress to strong teamwork among staff and partners.
He said the agency is procuring maize locally at a rate of 1,000 to 3,000 metric tonnes per day, in addition to the 200,000 metric tonnes from Zambia.
