Malawi president fires Minister over covid-19 funds abuse
President Chakwera has fired Minister of labour Ken Kandodo and 14 people have been arrested for allegedly abusing 6.2 billion kwacha covid-19 funds
According to a report which National Audit Office released Kandodo borrowed the funds amounting to 613, 000 kwacha and used during Chakwera’s trip to South Africa
In his national address about the report which he delivered at Mtunthama state residences Chakwera said there will be more arrests.
“I have the intention of conducting similar audits into other funds spent on covid before he took office and all public money,” Chakkwera
Chakwera has directed secretary to president and cabinet Zangazanga Chikhosi to interdict without pay public officers on whose direct watch the financial mismanagement occurred and disciplinary proceedings to begin within 14 days
Commenting, National Ant Corruption Alliance has described the step taken by THE President as a clear message that he is committed in rooting out corruption in the country.
Chairperson for the Alliance, Moses Mkandawire, however was quick to ask Malawians to support Chakwera’s agenda in stumping out corruption
On the call that the president has to do more as it alleges that there are still big fishes behind the scandal, Mkandawire urged the citizenry to monitor if indeed the Malawi leader will not shield anyone involved in corruption.
Meanwhile, political scientist has saluted the president for dropping in the cabinet, the labour minister for allegedly pocketing in allowances, money meant for COVID 19 response.
Speaking to radio Islam, Sherif Kaisi says there is however need to ensure that Kandodo has been prosecuted and bring to light other culprits.
