Malawi launches 2025 General Elections
Malawi’s 2025 general elections which will usher in office new president, Members of Parliament and ward councilors have been launched
Speaking during the launch chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission Justice Anabel Mtalimanja urged all Malawians to participate in preparatory activities for the elections whose voting will take place on 16th September next year.
Mtalimanja urged political parties and the accredited organisations to provide necessary civic education to Malawians about the general elections
She said registration of the voters will be held in three phases of 14 days each and spoke against political violence
“From 6th August MEC will begin collecting names of political party monitors,” Mtalimanja
The chairperson of MEC presented certificates to two organizations on behalf of other accredited organizations
On their part Secretary General of UTM Patricia Kaliati and Director of elections for AFORD Davie Katete urged Malawi Electoral Commission to rectify the challenges affecting the electoral processes
Executive director of Malawi Union of the Blind MUB Ezekiel Kumwenda expressed worry that MEC chair did not mention anything regarding people with disabilities
One of the participants at the launch of the elections encouraged Malawians to vote in next year’s general elections because it is their democratic right and choose wisely their leaders
UN resident coordinator Addah Dontoh has pledged that her organization will support Malawi in holding the elections
Director of Oxfam Lingalireni Mihowa says they are striving to help women contest in the elections
NGO Gender Coordination Network NGO GCN has said it requires 3.5 billion kwacha to enhance women involvement in 2025 elections
During a press briefing chairperson of the network Maggie Kathewera Banda urged Malawi police service to take action against violence on women participating in politics
Kathewera Banda said NGO GCN still implements 50/50 campaign which promotes equal representation of women in political leadership roles
She appealed to development partners to support their initiative of empowering women to actively engage in electoral processes
