Malawi High Court Rules Against National Council For Higher Education

High Court Judge Jack N’rira has ruled that National Council for Higher Education NCHE has no constitutional mandate to accredit and discredit education institutions in Malawi.

N’vira made the ruling in a case which NCHE withdrew an accreditation of Blantyre International University BIU.

Reacting to the ruling BIU former student Osman Kennedy, who was among the students who took the matter to court, expressed happiness saying the ruling has brought confidence in all students at the university.

“NCHE’S decision to discredit BIU affected us because employers could not approve our degrees,” said Kennedy

He further said the ruling is also an indication that courts in Malawi are independent.
