Malawi Gets K50 billion Grant from China
Malawi and China have signed a K50 billion financing agreement for the construction of the Judicial Complex in Lilongwe.
Speaking after signing the agreement, Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Simplex Chithyola Banda described the agreement as a gift from the Chinese government to the people of Malawi.
The minister said the grant will in one way enhance and transform Malawi’s infrastructure.
Signing on behalf of the Chinese government, the Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Long Zhou said his government would see to it that the project runs its full course.
But commenting on the development, one of the country’s economists, Adam Chikapa Gayesi, said Malawi government needs to utilize the grant to its intended purpose to benefit all Malawians.
Gayesi has however said Malawi has failed to prosper though it has been receiving grants due poor policies and corruption.
The signing agreement took place on the sidelines of the 2024 Forum on China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in Beijing China.
