Malawi Electoral Commission to conduct supplementary voter registration
Malawi Electoral Commission MEC has said will conduct supplementary voter registration
The commission says the decision to extend the voter registration was made at meeting held on Monday 16th December 21, 2024
MEC says during the meeting they reviewed and considered the conduct of all three phases of voter registration exercise for 2025 general elections, section 4 of presidential, parliamentary and local government elections Act of 2023 as well as the order and directive of High court in its ruling on 25th October in the case of George Chipwaila and others vs Malawi electoral commission regarding availability of civil registration services at voter registration centres
In a statement director of media and public relations Sangwani Mwafulirwa says due to the court order the commission resolved that it will conduct supplementary registration for five days in councils under phase 1 targeting only eligible voters that registered with national registration bureau NRB from 21st October
Mwafulirwa says in phases 2 and 3 councils they are targeting only eligible voters who presented themselves at voter registration centres and applied for civil registration with the bureau but were not issued national ID number
Furthermore during the supplementary voter registration in phase 2 and 3 there will be no fresh civil registration by NRB at the voter registration centres
However NRB staff will be present to provide identification and verification services for applicants that will have challenges with their proof of national registration
MEC says will issue specific communication regarding dates and modalities for supplementary voter registration exercise.
