Malawi Local Government Association MALGA has called for an agent meeting with the ministry of health and Sanitation over its planed comprehensive redeployment of health workers across the country in a move aimed at improving service delivery.
In a statement dated 10 April 2026 MALGA argues that the responsibility to deploy and manage health personnel lies with the ministry of local government.
On Thursday, 9 April 2026, the secretary for health Dr Dan Namlika announced in a letter addressed to the Local Government and Rural Development, that the shake up was part of efforts to enhance productivity of the health workforce in line with priorities outlined in the Health Sector Strategic Plan III.
Dr Namalika, said the redeployment seeks to ensure equitable distribution of skilled personnel, fill critical staffing gaps, and strengthen management capacity across health facilities, indicating that the process would be guided by existing public service regulations and human resource policies, with consideration given to service delivery needs, staff competencies, and continuity of care.
Commenting, Malawi Health Equity Network MEHN welcomed government move saying will help to decongest district hospitals.
MEHN executive director George Jobe, said some hard-to-reach areas were suffering as most of the times health care workers prefer to work in urban areas.
“ Most health workers prefer working in central or district hospitals, so most healthy centres were lacking experts who could be assisting people in those areas especially hard-to-reach areas so the redeployment exercise will help in making sure that there is no congestion in district hospitals”, said Jobe.
Jobe however, asked the ministry to explain the modalities of the redirection and the health workers transfers and also follow the guidelines in order for them to serve the nation diligently.
