Likoma, Chizumulu Islands residents appeal for alternative transport
Residents of Likoma and Chizumulu Islands have pleaded with authorities to consider providing them with transport alternatives as Malawi Shipping Company has reduced passengers to less than one hundred.
The appeal comes after Malawi Shipping Company resorted to follow the government directions of discouraging the gathering of more than one hundred.
Reacting to the development, Member of Parliament for Likoma, Christopher Songwe, said much as he understands the importance of following preventive measures of corona virus the reduction has affected lives of people on the islands.
“Meanwhile am liaising with government to station MV Chilembwe at Nkhatabay to ferry people to and from Likoma,” says Songwe
On his part, Public Relations Manager for Malawi Shipping Company, Thomas Chafunya, said the changes will greatly affect operations of the company.
“The company has an obligatory to create and maintain the social distance as advised by government and World Health Organization,” Chafunya adds
On the appeal by Likoma people Chafunya said the management is going to seat down and see how best they can assist people on Likoma and Chizumulu Islands.
