Leader of opposition asks president to reverse fuel price hike
Leader of opposition in Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa has asked President Dr Lazarus Chakwera to intervene and reverse the decision to hike fuel prices.
Honorable Nankhumwa made the appeal few days after Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority MERA announced an upward adjustment of fuel pump prices.
In a statement Nankhumwa said government should have come up with a better explanation to justify the exorbitant hike of fuel prices when the kwacha depreciation was just insignificant.
He also wondered why the adjustment has been made now although neighboring countries within SADC region have revised downwards their fuel prices this month.
“While it is true that there could have been some negative economic undercurrents, the adjustment was ill-timed considering that many Malawians are faced with untold sufferings in their daily lives,” Nankhumwa
He said government should have waited for Malawians to recover from the hardships that come about as a result of covid-19 pandemic.
Nankhumwa has therefore asked government to always put Malawians interest at heart when making decisions that have far-reaching economic consequences.
