Islamic Relief Malawi hands over houses to cyclone Idai victims
Islamic Relief IR Malawi has handed over houses to victims of cyclone Idai in group village headman Medrum T/A Mlilima in Chikwawa district.
The handover ceremony took place at the site where over 50 beneficiaries received certificates for the houses.
IR Malawi has also constructed 100 houses in Jombo and langwani, 110 sanitatition facilities, solar water pumps and kiosks with support from Islamic Relief Netherlands and UK.
Speaking after the ceremony, programs manager for IR Malawi Pratap Maharjan said his organization aims at giving hope and improving living conditions for people hence the support.
“IR has used 950 million kwacha for the whole project and the organization is satisfied with the work delivered to the people,” Maharjan
He said is looking forward to reaching out to more people upon availability of funds.
In his remarks Traditional Authority Mililima hailed IR Malawi for the support hence asking other organizations to emulate the gesture.
Mlilima then asked beneficiaries to care for the houses and report to police anyone vandalizing the resources.
Chikwawa district council Chairperson Gerald Bede who was guest of honor concurred with Mlilima therefore asked IR to also consider other flood prone areas in the district with the support.
Bede then asked people who are still clinging in flood prone areas to move up lands to avoid accidents as the rains have started.
One of the beneficiaries Rita Odelesi did not hide her happiness hence thanking IR Malawi for the support and asked the organization to consider other victims.
