IHAM, Physicians Across Continents organise Fistula Camp in Phalombe
Islamic Health Association of Malawi (IHAM) collaboration with Physicians Across Continents Jordan say are targeting to reach up to 70 women in its free fistula camp in Phalombe district.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Islam, IHAM executive director Hajj Dyton, says the five day camp comes following increased number of women who are silently suffering from the disease.
According to Dayton Obstetric fistulas are a major public health concern in Malawi and estimated that about 2000 new cases of obstetric fistulas are documented every year and that two to eight women in every 1000 women are at risk of developing the condition at the time of delivery.
He says considering the fact that the country has one facility that is treating women with fistula, they have decided to help through the camp which will start from 9th to 13th September.
Dayton says they will also be providing food and transport to the patients hence calling upon people with the condition to come forward.
