Human Rights Defenders Coalition HRDC has expressed concern over Malawi Revenue Authority’s intention of awarding contracts worth 5.4 billion kwacha to three security companies of which two of them belong to cabinet ministers.
In a statement HRDC says the development represents a serious affront to constitutionalism and rule of law and reinforces the deeply entrenched culture of state capture and elite immunity that Malawians have constantly rejected.
HRDC has also questioned the awarding of contract to masters Security Company whose owner was previously arrested and prosecuted by the regulatory authority for allegedly forging tax clearance certificate.
The organization has therefore called on cabinet ministers not to use their position to award themselves contracts as it is against the constitution.
