Government appoints boards, activists dissasfied
As government has appointed 67 board of directors of parastatal organizations, youth activist has expressed concern over inclusion of youths as board members for National Youth Council of Malawi only.
Speaking to radio Islam, Executive director for Centre for Youth Empowerment and Civic Education CYECE, Lucky Mbewe said they expected government to appoint youths in other boards to ensure youths are groomed to be future leaders.
He has meanwhile urged political leadership to be strategic in matters concerning youths.
“It is very unfortunate that three to four youths have been appointed to National Youth Council of Malawi yet the youths make majority of the population,” said Mbewe
Meanwhile, gender activist Emma Kaliya says there is no progress in as far as women representation in government positions is concerned.
According to Kaliya it’s so disheartening that effort of ensuring that women take up government positions are failing to yield although various stakeholders are lobbying.
“Analysis indicates that women make 15 percent of the appointed members which is very bad. I have been talking about this for long time. I approached relevant authorities on the matter,” Kaliya stated
Meanwhile, political scientist has advised the newly appointed board members to serve interest of Malawians not politicians
University of Livingstonia political lecturer, George Phiri said the appointments will now operationalize functions of the institutions.
He said it is very good that government has appointed the boards after some time without them
