Government through Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has commended Gift of the Givers Foundation for its timely and impactful support to the displaced households in Nkhotakota district.
Speaking during the distribution exercise at Mdema Camp, in Dwangwa which is hosting 289 families, Romatchinga Nkhata, Disaster Risk Management Officer for Nkhotakota District Council said the relief items will help to address immediate needs of the victims.
Nkhata said the organization’s contribution has complemented government efforts in responding to emergencies through provision of food relief and other essential supplies, at a time when many households are struggling to cope with the aftermath of the floods.
“From the 28th of December we started receiving reports that some parts of Nkhotakota district have been affected by floods and as a council we started to do our search and rescue mission. Mdema is one of the camps accommodating households that were trapped on the lakeside and 11 thousand households have been affected”. She explained.
Nkhata added that out the 11 thousand affected families, 2500 households are seeking shelter in temporally camps within the district.
“We have to say thank you to Gift of the Givers Foundation for the assistance they have rendered to our people here in Nkhotakota who were affected by the flooding. As you know during flooding and each and every disaster, people lose their things like food, clothes, kitchen utensils which Gift of the givers have provided’. She added.
Gift of the Givers has provided both food and non-food relief items including blankets, plastic sheets, soap, maize flour, rice, soya pieces, salt, pairs of shoes, buckets and water guards to 150 households.
