Former vice president urges government to intensify civic education on tree management

Former Vice President Dr Cassim Chilumpha has urged government through department of forestry to intensify civic education on management of planted trees.

Dr Chilumpha was speaking in the area of Senior Chief Kadewere in Chiradzulu when he graced a tree planting ceremony organized by Helpline Malawi, an organization he founded.

Dr Chilumpha said many trees are being planted but little is done in taking care of them.

He said imparting knowledge in the masses on tree management would help in increasing tree survival since they will be well taken care of.

In his remarks, senior chief Kadewere said he has imposed by laws which are aimed at protecting forest products.

Kadewere added has already fined people found flouting the bylaws.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Chiradzulu East Joseph Nomale has commended helpline Malawi for planting 3000 trees in his constituency.

Nomale said the initiative is complimenting their efforts in environmental conservation as youth in the area formed youth clubs and some of them are running tree nurseries.
