Fire kills 3 yr old child

Fire has claimed life of a child and injured three others in Mangochi district.

Public Relations Officer for Mangochi Rodreck Maida has confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Mphatso Jackson.

Maida said the incident happened when people in Wadikanga village TA Bwananyambi in the district were conducting initiation ceremony in a house belonging to Abiti Willy.

“Mother of the deceased and other two young girls slept in the house whilst some women and young girls slept in the grass fence outside,” said Maida.

He further said the fire that was used to warm the people during the ceremony torched a grass fence and the blaze extended to the grass roof because of wind.

“People who gathered at the scene managed to rescue the two young girls but failed to rescue a 3 year old boy since the torched grass roof fell into the house. The deceased died on spot but the injured are admitted at Mangochi District Hospital,” explained Maida.

Postmortem conducted at Mangochi District Hospital revealed that death was due to suffocation and severe burnt wounds.
