Department of Climate Change and Meteological services DCCMS says the tropical cyclone Chido is nearing Mozambique from Madagascar at a distance of 1100 kilometers.
According to DCCMS the cyclone is now at the Mozambique Channel between Madagascar and Mozambique.
Tropical Cyclone Chido is expected to make a landfall near Nacala, Mozambique, over 500 kilometers from Mulanje border.
The country is expected to experience water levels between 15th and 21st December 2024 which may trigger flooding.
Meanwhile, Ministry of Education has advised all education divisions and district offices in the southern region and those along the lake shore, “to issue immediate disaster alerts to schools.”
The Ministry through a memo signed by Secretary for Education, Dr. Mangani Chilala Katundu, urges schools to adhere to the Meteorological department advisory to reduce the impact of Cyclone Chido.
Katundu has requested school authorities and students to move to safer places, avoid crossing flooded rivers and walking through running waters and stay away from power lines and electrical wires, among other measures.
