Court orders Malawi president to reinstate MEC commissioners

High court in Blantyre has ordered President Lazarus Chakwera to immediately reinstate two commissioners of Malawi Electoral Commission MEC Dr Jean Mathanga and Linda Kunje

The court has further ordered government to pay honoraria to the two starting from the month they stopped receiving these benefits

Apart from that High court judge Jack Nriva has also ordered office of president to pay all legal costs

Chakwera fired the two saying they were appointed illegally by former president Peter Mutharika because were found incompetent by public appointments committee of parliament

However attorney general Chikosa Silungwe advised government to reappoint Mathanga and Kunje because rescinding their appointment had implications

The two challenged Chakwera’s decision to rescind their appointment
