Court dismisses MP’s application against Presidential Age Limit

High court has dismissed an application by Member of Parliament for Thyolo Thava for an injunction restraining the speaker Catherine Gotani Hara from presiding over debate and passage of age limit bill.

Judge Kenyatta Nyirenda says the action by Navicha is strike-out for improper commencement

Navicha sought a declaration that the proposed amendment of the constitution if tabled and passed would be unconstitutional, discriminatory and unreasonable

Nyirenda says a group called citizen of justice and equity submitted to parliament for amendment of constitution to limit the age at which a person can be elected as president

The intention of the enactment is to bar anyone over 80 years from contesting as president in the fourth coming presidential elections.
