CHRR calls for Malawi’s review of land acquisition, resettlement laws
Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation CHRR says Malawi must review land acquisition and resettlement laws to protect displaced people in the country
This was said when CHRR in conjunction with International Accountability Project IAP was launching a report on land acquisition and resettlement which has exposed numerous loopholes that are violating rights of people
Speaking during the launch of the report in Lilongwe CHRR executive director Michael Kaiyatsa recommended to government to promote and protect rights of affected communities during resettlement period
Kaiyatsa revealed that the processes of land acquisition, compensation and resettlement have been executed unlawfully because many displaced people have been duped hence failing to get their compensation
In her remarks senior evaluation officer in the ministry of lands Patricia Williams noted the challenges which the report has exposed though she refuted some sections saying before the ministry embarks on the processes it sensitizes communities and holds consultation meetings
