Ministry of health has attributed interventions like Tithetse Cholera Campaign as one of the main factors that have led to the decline of cholera cases in the country this year.
Speaking in an interview with radio Islam the ministry’s public relations officer Adrian Chikumbe said the country has registered few cholera cases this year as compared to about 700 to 800 were being recorded the same period in the previous years.
“To begin with, every a single cholera case is enough reason for us to worry about because cholera being a highly infectious condition, even with just one case if we are not careful, it can turn into even 20 cases within, this is why we try our level best to achieve a no single cholera case”. He said
Chikumbe says the Ministry has intensified and still utilizing different strategies introduced during the campaign including vaccinations, ensuring that people are have access to clean or treated water and strengthened surveillance for early detection of cholera.
“You may recall in 2023 whereby January to February were recording the highest numbers of cholera and we recorded about 20 deaths a result of cholera, this is why we had to sit down and strategize so we made a lot of initiatives to contain that”. Chikumbe said.
He added that the emergency operating committees the ministry established in all councils across the country also helped the ministry receive reports and act upon any information in as far as fighting against cholera is concerned.
Chikumbe said the ministry also makes sure that they have revised all messages and ensure dissemination of such to people so that Malawians are able to know the risks of cholera.
In addition, Chikumbe said reduction in cholera cases can also be attributed to government commitment in the provision of cholera treatment across the country.
He therefore urged the public to adhere to all measures including accessing the vaccines provided in hotspot districts as advised by authorities.
