Chisankho Watch Board Chairperson Gilford Matonga has stressed the country’s need for sustainable electoral reforms that require accord, shared ownership and clear implementation pathways.
Speaking during a three-day local observers’ electoral findings consolidation and validation workshop in Lilongwe, Matonga has said the 2025 general elections were conducted in a politically competitive and closely observed environment.
Matonga said the workshop which brought together different stakeholders is a milestone towards achieving better results in future elections as they will be able to share notes and map the way forward.
He says there is need to consolidate and translate findings from the 2025 general elections into actionable electoral reform interventions, emphasising the need to move beyond observation towards meaningful transformation.
Matonga therefore underscored the organisation’s commitment to supporting a credible, transparent and inclusive electoral system in the country.
In his remarks, CCJP National Coordinator Lewis Msiyadungu says there is need for stakeholders to consolidate key gaps and present them to relevant authorities for action ahead of the 2030 general elections.
Msiyadungu expressed optimism that the workshop would iron out issues affected the electoral process as major stakeholders brought about so many challenges that have been affecting their operations especially during elections.
Meanwhile, Executive Director of Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD), Bornface Chibwana has emphasised the need to promote women’s participation in politics to increase their representation in elected positions.
Chibwana said stakeholders should set up regulations that would assist the political parties to ensure they follow proper procedures in as far as the electoral process is concerned.
“Yes there are a number of issues that need to be addressed and another issue that the political parties have raised is an issue to do with handouts, there have been so many complaints that political parties logged to the office of registrar of political parties so we need to find regulations that would be enforced to deal with this practice”. He added.
He then said there is also need for the political parties to make sure they include aspects of gender in their political party agendas in order to ensure women participation.
