Some traditional leaders in the country have pleaded with Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to suspend voter registration exercise so that Malawi should focus on the fight against the spread of corona virus.
Speaking at a press conference held in Blantyre, Traditional leaders from Blantyre, Mwanza, Chikwawa and Nsanje said Malawi is at a crossroad therefore if it is not taken care of many Malawians will perish.
The chiefs led by Paramount Chief Lundu, said “corona virus pandemic needs urgent attention hence the registration exercise can be delayed to protect people from the disease.”
Paramount Lundu however pleaded with political party leaders to remain united in the fight against the pandemic.
On his part Senior Chief Malemia of Nsanje district said they are not against fresh presidential elections but protecting lives of all Malawians.
Among other chiefs who attended the meeting are Traditional Authorities Govati and Nthache of Mwanza, Kapeni, Kuntaja and Kunthembwe from Blantyre, Nyachikadza, Chimombo, Malemia from Nsanje including Ngowe and Chapananga from Chikwawa.
