Director of the environmental affairs department in the Ministry of natural resources Taonga Mbale Luka says carbon trading will provide new sources of financing, conservative effort and contributes to the development of the country.
Speaking in Salima during a media orientation on carbon trading, Luka highlighted that carbon trading has the potential to support the livelihood of local communities, as Malawi is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
The director said so far, there are a lot of carbon traders that are interested to invest in carbon trading in Malawi, but are yet to fully realize the benefits that are coming.
“Carbon trading will help the country to develop, because of the technologies that are coming, with carbon trading, other countries already have carbon trading initiatives and mostly they are countries that doing well economically, with carbon trading the country will be able to track progress and we already have traders that want to go into carbon trading in the country so communities can benefit, as you know our country is already facing challenges of climate change”, She said.
Luka added that government has put in place the carbon framework that seeks to ensure that the carbon projects align with natural development priorities, respect community and deliver real environmental benefits.
She said, within the framework government has put in place provisions that would help to trickle down the community’s welfare.
Carbon trading is a newly introduced initiative that seeks to provide opportunities for companies to invest in the country and enhance the country’s ability to mitigate challenges resulting from climate change through finances collected from the investors.
