Business operators at Mangochi Boma have threatened to stop paying market fees until the Municipality resumes waste removal and clears stagnant water in drainage systems whose construction has not been completed.
One of the traders told Radio Islam that during this rainy season, stagnant water and accumulated waste in the drains are producing a bad smell.
He said the development poses health risks as they can cause disease outbreaks in the municipality
Responding to the matter, Director of Public Works at Mangochi Municipality Enerst Kadzokoya, said the drainage project delayed because the contractor was in discussions with the road funder, Roads Fund Administration.
He asked people of Mangochi to be patient saying officials responsible for waste management have assessed the problem and corrective measures will start tomorrow.
Regarding drainage channels inside the market Kadzokoya said the council is engaging traders who constructed their stalls on top of the drains—causing water blockages—to remove those structures.
