High court asked to disclose criteria used in reducing presidential elections case legal fees
Political analyst has urged the high court to consider informing the public the criteria used in reducing legal fees for lawyers of President Dr Lazarus Chakwera and his vice Saulos Chilima.
According to high court the fees has been reduced from the 9. 7 billion kwacha to 4 billion kwacha.
Malawians have in the past months expressed concern over the exorbitant legal fees which government is expected to pay lawyers for Dr Chakwera and Chilima in the presidential elections case.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Islam, Vincent Kondowe said it was surprising when the court announced 9.7 billion kwacha legal fees, as most of the lawyers said they were helping out of good will.
Kondowe, however, has hailed the courts for providing a listening ear as shown through the reduction.
He said, “This is a good substantial reduction and will recommend the judiciary for taking our concerns on board”.
“You can tell that it is about 5.7 billion reduction from 9.7 to 4 billion, how did they arrive on this? definitely some criteria s were not considered and definitely the court just rushed to look into the matter”.
