Zomba District Council has awarded standard 8 students who have been selected to national secondary schools
Speaking during the best student award ceremony in Zomba Minister of Education, Science and Technology Dr William Susuwele Banda said awarding best students is one way of motivating learners to improve performance
“The awards help to instill a spirit of competition among students and teachers,” Dr Banda said
He then encouraged the teachers to consider giving the students real life examples other than restricting themselves to the syllabus
On his part District commissioner Emmanuel Bambe said education is among the priorities in the district development plan
Bambe said “it is because of this that the district council is doing all it can to ensure that standards of education are improved.”
He however lamented the challenges the district faces during disaster which rendered some schools to be evacuation centers hence affecting the lessons
Commenting on the awards, District Education Manager Charles Sakwata said they thought of awarding the students who have been selected to national secondary schools in order to motivate them
He attributed the success to new techniques they deployed after learning from their colleagues who did well in 2018 examinations.
“Apart from the success, there are challenges his office encounters citing inadequate desks in schools, computer and motor bikes for Primary School Education Advisors (PEAS) among others,” said Sakwata
Zomba District moved from position 20 in 2018 to position 10 in 2019 with a total number of 56 students been selected to various national secondary schools this year from 45 students last year.
