The Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) said the appointment of Dr Peter Kumpalume as regional director for the Africa Centre for Disease Control and prevention (CDC), will greatly benefit Malawi’s health sector.
Speaking in an interview with radio Islam executive director for MHEN Gorge Jobe said the appointment of Dr. Kumpalume is a clear testimony that Malawi has been and continues to contribute towards regional and global leadership in health.
While congratulating him, Jobe stressed that Dr. Kumpalume has a great history in the promotion of health both within and outside the country therefore he deserves the appointment which will not only benefit Malawi but Africa as a whole.
“The appointment of Dr. Kumpalume is good news, we congratulate him and of course we also deserve to be congratulated as Malawi. This is a clear testimony that Malawi is contributing towards the regional and global health leadership because this is a Malawian holding this position”, he said.
“Knowing him because of his contributions when he worked in the UK in the health sector including pharmaceutical manufacturing, when he returned to Malawi, he became minister of health and recently he was working with Kamuzu University of Health sciences where he also played a big role in a number of areas including efforts to establish a pharmaceutical plant. When you look at his qualifications, he is very suitable for the position”, explained Jobe.
He added that Dr. Kumpalume will contribute in serving the global health and towards the growth of the DCD which plays a big role in strengthening disease surveillance, emergency preparedness and health resilience.
Jobe said MEHN supports his appointment and therefore requested all other stakeholders to collaborate and provide necessary support, for the benefit of Malawi’s health sector.
Dr. Peter Kumpalume served as the country’s minister of health during the first term of President Peter Mutharika and also served as MP for Blantyre West from 2014 to 2019, where he served in Public Appointments, Public Accounts and Legal Affairs Committees of Parliament.
