Vigils at Prescane Limited by Community members led by center for democracy and economic development initiative CDEDI and citizen league at Dyeratu in Chikwawa district has ended after both parties have agreed to address the issue.
The vigils were taking place following the expiry of a 7 day ultimatum given to Prescane Company Limited, to shut down its waste discharge disposal site and pay compensation to affected communities.
In his remarks district commissioner for Chikwawa District Council has assured that all parties involved, will on Monday sit down to map the way forward.
In his reaction CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa expressed happiness that the council has intervened and they have gotten what they wanted.
“We are now happy that we have met what we wanted, because we were fighting, we were pressing to have a clear road map that is within a time limit”, said Namiwa.
Namiwa says they are expecting prescane company Limited to compensate the affected communities and make sure that they have completely moved their evaporation ponds to areas that are not close to people.
The vigils have been held following and order by government last week for Presscane Limited to compensate all people affected by the waste management crisis that have been worsened by the ethanol company in Chikwawa District.
