A group of teachers who worked as polling officers but did not receive allowances from Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) have suspended their planned demonstrations that were scheduled for 10th December
Speaking to Radio Islam, one of the concerned teachers Yusuf Mzee, said after the authorities heard about the demonstrations a representative of the district commissioner and MEC officials invited the team to a discussion, where they assured them that their money will be paid by 15th December
Mzee said about 50 teachers who worked as presiding officers and clerks among others in Mangochi are yet to be paid their money since September 16 elections.
“We have been raising their concerns to authorities but nothing done, hence the planned demonstrations, ” Mzee says
Mzee has however said if MEC fails to pay them on 15 December, they will still hold the demonstrations on Tuesday 16 December
Meanwhile, MEC District Elections Officer for Mangochi, Rodrick Kazembe, confirmed the development saying efforts are underway to resolve the issue.
