Truck Drivers Strike Delays Fuel Transportation

Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority MERA chief executive officer Henry Kachaje says fuel tankers are stuck in the country’s borders because of truck drivers’ strike.

Kachaje told Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources and Climate Change that it is difficult to bring in fuel and distribute to filling stations due to the strike.

He further said tanker drivers are receiving threats from those staging the strike therefore the country should expect fuel queues to resurface.

Kachaje says the country is unable to meet the monthly requirement of 60 million dollars to cover consumption excluding the strategic reserve funding.

He says there are trucks of fuel stuck at Mwanza, Songwe and Dedza borders due to truck drivers’ strike.

Kachaje says it seems the one leading the strike has issued a strong threat that no driver should dare drive the trucks describing it as a death and criminal’.

According to Kachaje the strike has already affected a two day distribution and he fears fuel queues may resurface if the issue is not resolved.
