Malawi Re-elected In UN Human Rights Council
Ministry of foreign affairs says Malawi’s re-election into United Nations Human Rights Council is an indication of the country’s continued efforts towards promotion and protection of human rights.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Islam, ministry of foreign affairs spokesperson, John Kawaye, says Malawi got 182 votes making it the first African country with most votes out of the 4 African countries which have been given a seat at the council.
According to Kawaye the development gives Malawi a chance to continue lobbying other countries to support the implementation and upholding of human rights across the country.
In his remarks, Michael Kaiyatsa of Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation says it is not enough for the country to be recognized at the international level whilst some Malawians continue to face all sorts of human rights violations.
He has since asked government to ensure that it strikes balance in the promotion and protection of rights of its citizens and international level.
