High court orders CFTC to refund over 2 billion kwacha to Airtel Malawi

High court has ordered Competition and Fair Trading Commission CFTC to refund the fine of over 2 billion kwacha to Airtel Malawi because it has no powers to issue fines

On 27th August 2021 CFTC ordered Airtel Malawi to pay the fine after the commission’s investigation following a number of consumer complaints against the telecommunications company under a bonus scheme Khethe-khethe loyalty program

In his ruling on Wednesday Judge Allan Muhome has also ordered director of public prosecutions to review the evidence placing criminal charges against Airtel Malawi within 90 days

Meanwhile CFTC spokesperson Innocent Helema says the commission will respect and act according to the court’s decision

Airtel Malawi Managing director Charles Kamoto has expressed excitement with the judgment but could not comment more as was yet to see the ruling

Meanwhile, Airtel Malawi Limited says has made a profit of 36.9 billion kwacha in 2022 an increase from 32.3 billion kwacha in 2021

This has been revealed during the company’s 24th annual general meeting held in Blantyre its managing director Charles Kamoto attributed the success to a 5 percent growth of its customer base and increase of average revenue per customer by 10 percent

Kamoto disclosed that the company is receiving a lot of pressure from its customers for its services and will continue to invest more resources in order to meet the demand

Meanwhile, outgoing chairman of the board of directors Alex Chitsime expressed satisfaction with company’s performance and hopes the company will do much more considering its human and resource capacity
